WHat is an orientation LEader?
Orientation leaders are your first point of contact with your UBC journey. They have all been in your shoes and know what it feels like to be in a new environment.Their role is to build community, facilitate friendships and learn from you to best tailor your orientation experience. We are proud and lucky to be the home of many student leaders from different horizons, with different passions and possessing different qualities making them all great support.
All of them however have a common goal: to make UBC Sauder feel like home.
MEET (SOME OF) YOUR ORIENTATION LEADERS
“Hi all! I transferred from the University of Manitoba (born and raised in Winnipeg) into second-year as I wanted to study commercial real estate in one of Canada’s most heated markets. Transferring to UBC Sauder was one of the best decisions I have made as it has provided endless opportunities and experiences. Moving to a new city and University, Imagine Day and the Spark were crucial in helping me settle into my surroundings. I met some of my best friends through these programs, which is why I have been committed to giving back to the program ever since. I was an Orientation Leader last year and I found it rewarding to help new students feel welcome in our UBC community, which is why I am a leader again this year.
I am also a huge soccer fan, an avid music fanatic, and proper Vancouver foodie… I look forward to making new friends and experiences in September, see you soon!”
“Hi! I’m originally from Mexico and lived in South Africa for 6 years before heading to Vancouver for university. I’m an early bird, I’m constantly laughing, and I believe a little smile can go a long way. Growing up as a third culture kid, diversity and inclusivity became incredibly important to me. I became an OL so I could make sure incoming first years feel welcome and empowered to celebrate the unique characteristics they will be bringing to our awesome student body. The Spark is a fun way to meet some of the greatest people at Sauder and a place to be immersed in a supportive community. I can’t wait to meet all of you and please feel free to reach out anytime!”
"It felt as if I was a first year student THREE times because of my two exchanges so I understand how exciting and overwhelming university can be! Becoming an OL, is my way sharing my support to the first year students just like how my OLs and senior students supported me in everything I did from first year onwards. Spark is one of the many places where those first meaningful relationships begin and will definitely be one of the most memorable experiences of your university career. I can't wait to meet as many of you as I can!"
“Hey! I'm a second year student at the Sauder School of Business. I wanted to be an OL this year because it is an amazing opportunity to meet incoming students and The Spark is a super fun time! My OL was extremely supportive to me throughout my first year and I still look up to her as a mentor, so I wanted to create that same experience for students who were in my position. Aside from meeting your OL, The Spark is an awesome way to meet all the other students joining you at Sauder. You'll definitely create strong friendships after days full of laughter and excitement!”
“I have wanted to be a Spark leader since I witnessed the incredible impact my leaders had on me during my first year. I had three leaders, ranging from second to fourth year, who were outgoing and very inclusive. They eased the anxious time of being in first year of university by making the effort to speak individually to each person in our group and create personal connections. Their energetic spirits encouraged us to cheer and have fun during activities, making the day even more of a blast. I want to encourage my group members to make many friends over the weekend. I want to be able to pass on my experiences and positively impact the first-year students during their first week at UBC!”
“Hello! Hola! Bonjour! I just finished my first year (time goes by too fast) and I’m INCREDIBLY excited to meet you!
Positivity is definitely in my blood. I love to smile, laugh, and have an extremely fun time! I also love to sing, play guitar, play Fortnite, and hike around the Lower Mainland! I
In terms of The Spark, this event was an AMAZING and CRAZY adventure! Not only did I get to meet so many fantastic people, but I got to experience the side of Sauder that isn’t usually thought of by students. It might be intimidating because of business suits or case competitions, but this three day event eliminates ALL those nerves! So be as loud as you want to, release all your fears, and SHOW ME HOW YOU GET DOWN!
The Spark brought a foundation of fun and community in my first year, especially through my orientation leaders. Through their love and compassion, I want to be a fellow mentor and bring my knowledge and advice of Sauder to you!
Again, I hope that the start of your university career starts off with a BANG through The Spark and don’t forget to breathe, exercise, and love every second!“
“Hi everybody! My name is Hilton and I'm a 4th year Operations and Logistics student. I came to UBC from a pretty small town, so it's been quite a transition here, but the people, the education, and the opportunities have made it all worthwhile. It's honestly been a life-changing experience and I thank the Spark for introducing me to everything I need to know about Sauder. I'm so excited for the journey you're about to embark on, congratulations class of 2022!”
